The biggest story of week one in college football was the uniforms worn by Maryland University on Monday night. The Terps will break out a new set in two weeks against West Virginia.
Until then let's concentrate on the games themselves.
Here are this Saturday's top matchups:
No. 3 Alabama at No. 23 Penn State:
The Crimson Tide of Alabama visit Happy Valley for the first time since 1989. The most famous matchup between the two teams is the 1979 Sugar Bowl when number 2 Alabama beat undefeated, number 1 Penn State 14-7.
Penn State head coach Joe Paterno never beat Alabama's Paul 'Bear' Bryant going 0-4 against him. Since then Paterno is 4-4 against the Crimosn Tide.
Both teams won in blowouts last week. Alabama beat Kent St. 48-7. Penn State defeated Indiana St. 41-7.
Alabama is the favorite. The SEC always gets the nod when playing out of conference.
The only question for both teams is who will start at quarterback? Alabama had AJ McCarron and Marquis Maze run the offense last week. Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin led the Nittany Lions.
No 16 Mississippi State vs Auburn:
The Bulldogs go to Jordan-Hare to face the defending national champion Tigers. Mississippi State had no trouble with Memphis beating that Tiger team 59-14. Auburn had to score two late touchdowns to beat Utah State 42-38 and fell out of the AP top 25.
Auburn head coach Gene Chizik is learning to live without quarterback Cam Newton. Mississippi State will be a major challenge.
Auburn won by only three last year in Starkville with Newton. Now they have to play without him. Auburn's defense must also figure out a way to stop Mississippi State running back Vick Ballard who rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns last week.
Notre Dame vs. Michigan:
This used to be a marquee matchup. Both were perennial Top 25 programs for years. Now it is more a game of nostalgia and tradition. However, the Big House in Ann Arbor will be filled 109,000 strong.
Notre Dame comes off of a 23-20 loss to South Florida at South Bend. Michigan defeated Western Michigan 34-10.
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly will start Tommy Rees at quarterback over Dayne Crist. Rees started the last four games of the 2010 season including a victory over Southern Cal.
There aren't any big names like Anthony Carter or Tim Brown in this game. Just Notre Dame and Michigan under the lights at the Big House.
Other games to watch:
Utah plays its first game as a member of the Pac-10 against Southern Cal.
Number 11 Virginia Tech visits East Carolina.
Number 12 South Carolina travels to Georgia in an SEC showdown.
Iowa travels to Ames to take on in state rival Iowa State.
Number 1 Oklahoma has the week off to get ready for their matchup next week with number 5 Florida State.
